[News] [PC]

Open thine eyes my children and bear witness to the long-awaited and massive update to one of the most popular space MMOGs in history, EVE Online. CCP today announced that the highly anticipated EVE Online: Trinity expansion for its popular massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) will be available on December 5, 2007. Available as a free online download for all EVE subscribers, Trinity features a next-generation graphics engine that sets a new aesthetic standard for online games. This expansion comes on the heels of another important milestone: more than 200,000 players now subscribe to EVE Online.

If you all recall the August chat I had with Nikola Cavic from CCP he hinted that this would be a huge expansion and is more than 2GB of new graphics data and such.

The release of the Trinity expansion fortifies EVE Online's position at the forefront of three-dimensional game graphics, creating a breath-taking cinematic experience during actual gameplay. In order to achieve its visual goals, CCP developed a new graphics engine, architected for Shader Model 3.0 and above. In this first showcase for the new engine, all ships, stations and stargates have been reconstructed. EVE Online: Trinity employs advanced lighting techniques and complex surface materials to make these highly detailed models even more realistic.

"EVE Online players always inspire and amaze everyone at CCP, and it is invigorating to see our subscription numbers surpass 200,000 as we prepare for the Trinity release," said Hilmar Veigar Petursson, Chief Executive Officer of CCP. "We're pleased that advances in graphics technology allow us to present the world of EVE as we had always envisioned it. We look forward to sharing the Trinity edition with the fast-growing, dedicated community that shares our passion to remove the barriers that constrain virtual worlds from meeting their full potential."

From the recent interviews with the design team on gameplay:

The update will include a mass of new tech II ships ranging across 5 classes including: electronics attack ships (frigates that are smaller than recon cruisers), heavy interdictors (bubble is attached to the ship), Black ops battleships - only non-capital class ship with jump drive, Marauders - utility battleship with 4 turrets and double damage bonus, Jump Freighters - standard freighters with jump drive.

Heat attenuation - you can shunt damage to least important ship modules because heat damage will be most on the adjacent modules. Additionally offline modules will act as heat sinks and prevent some modules from overheating and damaging nearby modules.

Nanite repairs - to repair modules in space without needing to dock. Better keep a good supply of these on hand in lowsec.

Fleet management has been greatly improved.

Drone improvements - Drones are smarter and can be in a different mode (passive or aggressive). Additionally they put in assist so you can have drones assist a friend. Meta-drones are included and are buffed, upgraded versions of the standards. To build you will need to explore in the new drone regions.

New missions for all levels and more for some of the factions that haven't had a lot of attention.

New exploration areas including gas cloud exploration areas and such.

Centralized Kill list to save you time and space.

New boosters are being added to low security systems. They are milder and more legal than the hardcore cousins you find in the outer regions.

Some on the fly module configuration for sensors so you can configure what bonuses you want when you want them.

The Trinity launch also includes a host of new features. For full details of added features, please visit

CCP is releasing two versions of EVE Online: Trinity. Gameplay will remain the same in both versions and both will be available as free downloads. A Classic version of EVE Online: Trinity will be available December 5, 2007 for Microsoft Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms at The Premium version of EVE Online: Trinity, which will include updated and enhanced graphics, will be available on Microsoft Windows on December 5, 2007 and to Mac and Linux subscribers in the first quarter of 2008.

The premium version is compatible with graphics cards capable of displaying Shader 3.0 graphics or better.
