[News] [PC] [PS3] [OpEd] [X360]

UNreal Tournament 2007

Mark Rein, VP of Epic Games, had some interesting comments to make about what is happening with the UT3 development cycle and what we can expect in the way of betas and demos while speaking with Eurogamer. He had some interesting things to say and I thought I would take a closer look at that insted of just telling you what he said.

Basically he said there will be no PS3 demo prior to the release of the game set for 12 November this year, but there may be a PC 'demo' which will be more like a beta so that the development team can get some feedback from the community. Now I managed to get my hands on the game for a brief period during GP Leipzig and I can say it looks mostly done. From what I saw they could release the 'beta' at any moment though it seemed to me like the PhysX engine could still use a little tweaking. Pieces of wood and debris moved almost sluggishly as if they were floating to the ground like leaves as an example of what I mean.

Mark Rein also stated that any time they take making a demo takes time away from making the game. Here, here, but... A demo would have multiple uses including allowing PC gamers to test and see if their machines are powerful enough to run the game effectively. Sure every game has minimum system requirements but that doesn't mean it will play well on that machine.

On the other hand I understand that they aren't so overstaffed that they can splinter off a group of developers just to polish up a demo for every platform. Since they're most likely doing development on PCs then it is easier to get a demo out on it, but then to take the demo and port it to the other platforms (PS3 and Xbox 360) is silly.

Most gamers have a PC even if they have game consoles. The question as to whether the game will play or not does not come up in console gaming but only in PC gaming. So a demo on the PC is good and no demo on the consoles is moot.

After all, if you don't know what this game is then you probably wouldn't want to buy it anyway.

The game is set to be released in 12 November on the PS3 and PC and an Xbox 360 version next year.
