[News] [NDS] [Wii]

I'm just waiting for the news conference to begin.

Starting out with a strange "no Reggie" appearance.

Brought out Shaun White to introduce his game for the Wii, Shaun White's Snowboarding for the Wii and Wii Balance Board.

Nintendo's Global President,  Satoru Iwata, appeared to talk shop and about how Nintendo's new business model involves blurring the lines between "gamers and non-gamers".  "Destroy the Psychological Barrier" was a highlighted term in his talk.  He went on to brag that Guitar Hero III for the Wii is outselling the versions on all other platforms.  Iwata stressed that they must continue to innovate, lest consumers grow tired of their products - "engage players in new ways."

On to taped highlights.

Animal Crossing City Folk for the Wii was announced; it includes a "city" location that involves some online swapping and interaction, including writing messages to other players.  Also, Wii Speak was announced - a omni-directional microphone for online use with the Wii.  It will allow everyone in a room to speak across the Wii's Wifi connection other players.

Reggie then arrived, and said Wii Speak and City Folk would be out before year's end.  Then some money talk:

  • $5 billion in revenue for the Wii and DS platforms in the U.S. alone
  • Nintendo DS sales by next March expected to cross the 100 million units sold mark
  • DS software sales are up 29% this year
  • Wii is outselling the pace of the PS2's first 19 months, and expected to surpass the Xbox 360 soon
  • "No system has ever sold more software in its first 19 months of availability" - with regard to Wii software sales
  • 19 third party titles, from 11 different publishers have sold over 400,000 units (for the Wii)

Three new third-party Wii games announced all using motion controls...

  • Star Wars: Clone Wars
  • Rayman Raving Rabbids: TV Party
  • Call of Duty: World at War

Guitar Hero: On Tour sold 300,000 copies in its first week, and On Tour Decades was announced.

  • On Tour includes song-sharing
  • Spore Creatures creature creator utilizes stylus; creatures can then be shared
  • Pokemon Ranger coming to the DS as well
  • GTA: Chinatown Wars coming to the DS!

The PDA functionality is being tested for the DS.

Cooking Nanny, an interactive cookbook available in Japan for the DS, coming to the States with American and International recipes.

Reggie talked about the Wii MotionPlus Wii Remote Add on, and its abilities.  He then announced Wii Sports Resort which utilizes and comes packaged with the add-on.

Wii Sports Resort, which will launch next spring, includes mini-games including:

  • Dog Frisbee
  • Wave Runner Racing
  • Sword Fighting

And their final annoucement began with a gentleman holding a Wii Remote connected to a Nunchuck, sitting in a chair, utilizing a Balance Board.  He was playing a virtual set of drums, in Wii Music.  Then Miyamoto arrived playing a Wii Remote saxophone.

Wii Music has apparently been indevelopment for some time, as Miyamoto said it was being developed in conjunction with Wii Play, Wii Sports, and Wii Fit.

  • Drums
  • Saxophone
  • Piano
  • Violin
  • Guitar

Drums, include two pedals and a lesson mode that Miyamoto said, through a "translator", would teach one to really play drums.  Alluding to E3 of two years ago, he introduced an Orchestra conductor mode, and then talked about the ability to create music videos.   Wii Music allows up to six simultaneous players.

Reggie closed by touting about the phenomenon they created.
