[News] [OpEd]

So another Video Game Awards show is finished, at least until next year.  Spike TV's 2007 Video Game Awards aired Sunday, and at least on the surface, seemed to be a classier presentation than previous years.

That was unless, you watched it for more than ten minutes.  If you did, you would have seen a lot of the same old crap: trailers presented as part of the awards show, terrible writing (at least this year, they could blame it on the strike), ridiculous looking award statuettes, and this year, body painted females standing in for the envelopes.

Simply put, it makes a mockery of the videogame industry.  Don't get me wrong: I don't think the industry needs a duplicate of the Oscars; on the contrary, we need our own Grammys meets the VMAs.  Something modern, fun, visually appealing, without acting like idiots.  I'm sick of the parade of D-list celebrities that attempt to deliver poorly written lines pertaining to videogames.  Its ridiculous.

The body painted models were particularly troubling.  I realize the presentation is put on by Spike TV, but they really ignore a huge demographic of female gamers when they do things of this nature.  It literally took female gaming back to the days of Pong.

The other thing that really bothered me, was the presentation of trailers during the awards show.  If the companies wanted to buy air time, by all means, let them.  But to present the trailer during programming, is an atrocity.  It is product placement on steroids, and it diminishes the integrity of the awards.

That being said, this years event was better than most.  Samuel L. Jackson was back, and although he barely stumbles through his hosting duties, he is an A-lister and a gamer.  The Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas was the new venue this year - another improvement.  Also, the appearances by Video Games Live, Kid Rock, and Foo Fighters were excellent additions.

I was happy to see BioShock take such high honors, as I feel it was deserving.  Many of the big name titles took home top honors in their respective categories, but the winner of the Best Individual Sports Game was surprising.  EA's Skate beat out Activision's Tony Hawk's Proving Ground.  Maybe Tony's reign has come to an end.

One interesting thing of note, during Bungie's acceptance of the most Addictive Game award, we learned via a pre-recorded acceptance that new Halo 3 maps would be coming tomorrow, Decemeber 11th, so be sure to watch for those on Xbox Live.
