As many cartoons crossover to or from video games I thought it would be interesting to have a section highlighting the upcoming week's new releases from the major publishers. Of  course I had to call it Saturday Morning Cartoons!

So pour yourselves a bowl of Capt'n Crunch spread some jam on some toast and make a big glass of strawberry Nestle Quik, the show is about to start.

I have linked to Amazon when possible because they generally have the best prices and the most information. The Viz stuff you can generally buy online and in most retailers including comic, dvd and book shops.

Starting out this coming week aresome DVDs from VIZ, one of the leader's in the anime and manga market in America. First up is one of the hotttest series of late.

Bleach Uncut Season 1 (DVD Box Set)

For as long as he can remember, Ichigo Kurosaki has been able to see ghosts. But when he meets Rukia, a Soul Reaper who battles evil spirits known as Hollows, he finds his life is changed forever. Now, with a newfound wealth of spiritual energy, Ichigo discovers his true calling: to protect the living and the dead from evil. And when he vows to defend Rukia from the ruthless justice of the Soul Society, he and his friends must cross over and do battle in the spirit world...

One Piece (Edited), Vol. 11 (DVD)

Tony Tony Chopper

On their way to foil the two-faced pirate Crocodile, who schemes to topple a kingdom, Nami falls ill, and the Straw Hat Pirates make an unplanned stop at Winter Islands to find a doctor. But instead they find the climate hostile, the populace untrusting and the natural inhabitants downright rabid! When everything seems to turn on them, help comes in the form of half-man, half-reindeer Tony Tony Chopper!

The Art of Angel Sanctuary 2: Lost Angel

A second art book featuring even more stunning artwork from Kaori Yuki, creator of the shojo/goth manga hit Angel Sanctuary. Along with the full-color, full-page illustrations, Lost Angel presents highly detailed character and series information indexed to help fans navigate the knotty Angel Sanctuary universe. In addition to all this, Kaori Yuki sits down for a nine-page interview. Highly recommended for angels and devils!

The Art of Naruto: Uzumaki

Relish Masashi Kishimoto's artwork in all its colorful glory in this new hardbound collection of images from the Naruto manga! Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Kakashi and all your favorite characters appear in over a hundred pages of gorgeous full-color images. The book also includes an extensive interview with creator Masashi Kishimoto, step-by-step details on the process of creating a Naruto illustration, 20 pages of notes from the author about each image in the book and a beautiful double-sided poster!

Bandai, another of the major producers of anime and manga seems to be lax, or is building up a big release list for the holidays, as they have not released much for the last couple months.

Lately comics and cartoons have been making the jump to the big screen in live-action formats and while researching this week's article I came across some interesting things I thought I would include.

Spider-Man - The High Definition Trilogy (Spider-Man / Spider-Man 2 / Spider-Man 3) [Blu-ray] (2004)

Now you can have the whole collection on just one disc. Marketing genius or money grab? Well it's Blu-ray so it could be either. But it sure would make a Spider-Man marathon easy to set up with you and your gaming friends. Let's face it, these are some of the best comic book superhero films ever, whether you like Peter Parker or not, and the character has been around in at least 3 different Saturday morning variations, my favorite being Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends with Iceman and Firestorm. Ah yes, fiery-haired Firestorm... Spidey sure does have a thing for redheads because Mary Jane Watson is no slouch in the looks department. Anyway this disc is set for release on 30 October 2007.

Looney Tunes - Golden Collection, Volume Five

Undoubtedly the kings of the Saturday morning cartoon. No early morning weekend animated romp could ever be complete or even start (because they had the 6-7am time slot) without the Looney Tunes - Daffy, Porky, Taz, Wiley, Roadrunner and of course Bugs. Now they are putting the cartoons together in collections on DVD so that young and old can enjoy them. This one is also set for release come 30 Oct 2007.

Well it seems to be a light week from what I can see. But of course we're just getting started with this new feature so it will take some time to get all the sources nailed down. Plus the holiday shopping season is barreling down upon us and that always means an upswing in releases so the coming weeks should prove to be far more interesting. Now I think it's time for some Malt O Meal.
