So, work took me south today to our Schaumburg office. While in the area, I figured I'd swing by Circuit City and see just how long the line was. For those of you not already aware, Circuit City is distributing their national inventory of PlayStation 3s to 6 of its large market stores.

One store in the New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, Richmond, and D.C. areas will each have 100 units. In addition, each of these stores will be giving away 5 consoles, with the exception of the New York (Union Square) store which will be giving away 100 consoles.

The line at the Chicago area (Schaumburg) store began forming early yesterday afternoon. By 11:30am, there were already about 100 people anxiously waiting. The second and third people in line had been there since 2pm CST Tuesday, approximately 58 hours before the midnight release. They had tried lining up earlier, but were instructed to leave the lot the night before by the area police.

I decided to take a quick walk inside the store and see just where the soon to be empty shelves for the PlayStation 3 would be placed. Undoubtedly to control retail shrinkage (theft) once the shelves are filled, the kiosk will be positioned at the very rear of the store. All that stood there was a poster announcing the black monolith's forthcoming arrival, cluttered with corrections to print ads of late. While standing there, I started chatting with a guy who was reading over the corrections. He already had his place in line, about 53 people back. He was there with two friends from California. They are approximately halfway through a trip to each of the 48 contiguous United States. The guys calculate they should arrive home around January 18th.

They were all waiting to purchase their consoles, which they planned to parlay into funds to finance the rest of their trip. Not a bad idea. I can think of a lot worse reasons to buy a PlayStation 3.
