Child's Play - Where Gamers Give Back


Child's Play, the Seattle-based charity started by Penny-Arcade founders, Jerry Holkins & Mike Krahulik, that donates gifts of video games has already managed to raise $495,000 this year. But really that is just a good start.

With 37 hospitals this year registered with the charity, donations need to be more than ever before. Expectations are high as one of the biggest fundraisers, the charity dinner, will not take place until December 13th in Bellevue, Washington. Along with the dinner is a silent auction that raises quite a bit. This year's auction items include:

The one-man company Nissimo, consisting solely of programmer Tony Williams, is enjoying a Cinderella story year. His game Fruitfall is being released through a deal with London based System 3 via Manchester's So Games for several platforms, including the Wii.

Wil Wright, legendary video game creator, recently appeared on The Cobert Report. The interview is rather amusing, as Wil touts his accomplishments and Colbert turns everything toward a comic, faux right-wing tangent. Its kinda like watching your grandparents ask you about video games...only Colbert at least pretends to be interested.

The Science Museum in South Kensington, London is playing host to Game On, an exhibit that explores the history, technology and culture of computer games from the 1960's to the present day. As part of that exhibit they will be playing host to a dazzling demonstration of future video gaming and entertainment technologies with a special event to run over three days in the run up to Christmas. The event, running parallel to Game On, is named Future Playground and will give members of the public access to cutting edge display and human interface technologies with twice-daily sessions on the 18th, 19th and 20th of December.

Finally, a chance to show off your rocking skills at the video game that has made nearly everyone a rock star, again: Guitar Hero II.

Gamestop will be holding local tournaments at their stores on Saturday, February 3, 2007. Not too many details are known at this time, but you can go here and signup to be notified as more details become available. Please be aware, this does not register you for the tournament. You will still need to visit your local store to register.

The game is awesome, if you haven't already played it. If you don't own it, you can order it here, and still have time to polish your skills before the tournament.
