[News] [Retro] [Wii]

Wii Virtual Console Banner

Sorry I'm late today but the Wii is gone and I move tomorrow. So I had to dig up the new stuff for the day. Well it's 2 games and I'm not overly excited about either. That's what I'm starting to think is a typical week for the V.C. just 'meh.' One of the games was an apparent attempt by Hudson Soft to double their profit and halve their workload. The other is a decent arcade baseball title.

The Dynastic Hero
TurboGrafx16 - 1 player - 10+ (unsure) - 800 points - HudsonSoft - 1993

What do you get when you take Wonder Boy in Monster Land make all the characters insect like and have insect-eating predators as stage bosses? Yes, The Dynastic Hero, which is essentially what Hudson did. Of course it came out on Super CD and had a good soundtrack considering the time

Anyway you are in control of Dyna. It controls like your standard platform game: run, jump, and kill enemies. The game is filled with RPG elements such as talking to townsfolk, collecting money to buy items, extending your life bar, and equipping a large variety of armor, weapons and magic. While interesting, and rare to find on an actual disc, it's almost exactly the same as the aforementioned predecessor.

Baseball Stars 2
Neo Geo - 1-2 players - 3+ - 900 Wii Points - SNK - 1992

This 2-player arcade style baseball game allowed you to choose from 18 teams across two leagues - Exciting League (beginner) & Fighting League (expert). The game was released in the arcade, on the Neo-Geo and on the NES between 1992 and 1994. Changed from the original NES game are:

  • RUNNING attribute intuitively affects speed on the field. DEFENSE only affects arm strength and diving range.
  • Improved pitch control. This gave the game a slightly less realistic feeling compared to the first installment.
  • Easier bunting controls. (Hold Down+A to bunt instead of stopping the swing partway through.)
  • Ability to see lead-offs while pitching/batting.
  • 6 pitchers and 4 bench players instead of 5 each.
  • New music and home run animations. These include the "Power connect" graphic for a two-run home run, an animated graphic of the batter rounding the bases and pumping his fist for a 3-run home run or grand slam, and a similar (yet very rare) graphic including a white Scottish terrier following the batter for a come-from-behind (usually game-ending) home run in a dramatic situation.
  • Inability to hire players.
