Top Lego Video Games

When naming one of the most successful gaming franchises in recent years, many gamers might be surprised (or not) to learn that amongst the Mario, Donkey Kong and Call of Duty franchises, there also sits on 50 million sales, the wildly popular Lego franchise.

This success has really turned around the company's fortunes, which were looking decidedly bleak in the early 2000s, when the company reported a loss of over £300 million pounds. Indeed, it is impressive that this classic children's toy has become such a behemoth in the video game industry. Whilst the franchise began back in 1997, since 2005, there have been more than 20 games released that bear the famous Danish company's trademark. The master stroke in marketing these games appeared to be the company's combining of the popular block building mechanics with famous movie franchises including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Batman, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

Lego video games have become so popular that they have been released across multiple gaming systems, and they will also feature as a launch title for the next generation Xbox One and PS4 consoles, which is actually a tie in to the upcoming movie which will be released in 2014. Arguably the best video games in the franchise are those that bear the Star Wars name, with that particular franchise selling over 20 million copies. Many players cite the 2 player co-op mode and the amusing cut scenes for making this series really stand out, although these features have since become hallmarks of other games in the franchise. This series has appeared on multiple systems including Xbox 360, iOS and Android platforms, PS3 and Wii.

Lego Batman has also proved extremely popular, and has recently spawned a sequel which included a new open world Gotham City as well as being the first fully voiced Lego video game. With better graphics but the same charming humor as seen in the Star Wars games, the release of Batman 2: DC Super Heroes arguably took the franchise to the next level in terms of open environments, collectables and all round slick presentation.

The lesser known Lego Alpha Team is also considered a classic by many, and was originally released on PC and Gameboy Color back in 2000. This game is very different from the more recent iterations, and encourages players to solve problems by building their way out of impossible situations. Though not widely available, it's definitely worth a try if given the opportunity.

With the Lego franchise still going strong, there is no doubt that there will be more gems to come from the block building blockbusters!
